Hair Loss in Men
It is a strange fact of medical history that every now and then certain drugs do not work as they were originally intended. Truer words could not be uttered about the drug most of us now know as Minoxidil (brand name Rogaine). As you may know, Minoxidil is one of only two drugs that has been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and is offered for sale all over the globe.
But did you know that Minoxidil was fist used to treat high blood pressure? Not only that, but it was also an oral drug. However, after months of clinical studies, patients and doctors both observed a welcomed side-effect. That is, the medication helped regrow hair in bald or balding subjects.
Initially, researchers actually believed that they had found the cure for hair loss . But in time they came to realise the limitations of the drug. What are they? Well, for one thing, treatments must continue indefinitely. If a patient or user stops taking Minoxidil, the new hair growth will fall out within a month or two.
The medication is also only effective on about half of the men who use it. And if you are a man who is experiencing rapid hair loss, the solution will not be effective. Drug makers who offer Minoxidil products clearly state that the topical solution is only effective for men who are experiencing mild, not excessive hair loss.
But even so, Minoxidil is a popular choice for men who are suffering from male pattern baldness because it can be purchased without a prescription and it is relatively cheap. The side effects for these treatments are also quite mild and consist of only minor scalp irritation and temporary shedding.
